The legend of South Carolina's Gray Man is more than a ghost story. At its heart, it's the story of a love that transcends all circumstances, even death.

The Story of the Gray Man

A man (whose name has sadly been lost to time) had been away from home and his beloved fiancé for quite some time. When it was finally time for him to make the journey home, he threw on his long gray coat, saddled his horse, and started to make his way back to Pawleys Island, SC, where his fiancé waited for him. Between the longing to see his love and the fear of an approaching storm, he decided to try and hurry across the island's marsh to get there sooner. Unfortunately, he was sucked down and killed in the marsh's muddy waters. Later his spirit appeared to his grieving fiancé on the beach near where he died. He warned her of an approaching hurricane and urged her and her family to flee. Sure enough, there soon came a devastating hurricane, but the fiancé and her family were safe because they had heeded the Gray Man's warning.

While the exact identity of ghostly figure varies between accounts, most iterations have this basic story in common.

Harbinger

The Gray Man is said to now wonder the beaches and marches of Pawleys Island whenever a hurricane is near. The first reported sighting of this ghost was back in 1822. Now, two centuries later, there are still those who claim to have seen the apparition of the Gray Man themselves. While most ghosts are often thought of as scary and even evil, the Gray Man has earned a friendly reputation of caring for the living residents of Pawleys Island by warning them of coming storms.
